A 250-year-old painting hailed as a "major portrait" of Gen. James Wolfe -- and believed to be the last important depiction of the Battle of Quebec hero left in private hands -- has emerged from obscurity to be sold at auction next month in Britain.

The Canadian government should buy it. If eyebrock hasn't done so already :)

Eyebrock is a Major-General Isaac Brock fan, I think, more than a Wolfe fan.

True, but I thought he might like it anyway. It would be nice if Canada bought it.

Wolfe was just another 'Rodney'. Brock was a real soldier.

It's our history Mr C. I'm no big fan of Wolfe but the army he led changed our history. Ignoring it is just revisionist. We have enough of those guys in Quebec already.

    Yes, Canada should buy this.

...As long as it isn't highway robbery..

You know, I'm actually a bit surprised by this coming from you. In my personal opinion, all countries should do their best to collect and take care of it's historical artefacts and treasures, even if it's a high cost. Paintings of individuals like Wolfe or Brock, royal jewels of monarchies both past and present, cemeteries and historical buildings, whatever else, really can't be replaced if they're damaged or destroyed. Sure, we can find people to paint the Mona Lisa exactly as Leonardo did, or we can reforge a set of knight armor, but it lacks the...essence of history. It lacks the dings, the imperfections, the challenges, and the triumph of the original.

I have no idea if this is making sense, haha.

Edit: Here's an example. Let's say...tomorrow, we find some shipwreck from the War of 1812. Most of the ship is totally rotted, but the cannons and a few other things (personal effects of the sailors, some elements of the ship) were found. Sure, we can mould a new cannon and say this is a replica of the cannon found on so and so ship, but it doesn't have the same value as the cannon that's half rusted in the bottom of some lake or ocean. The cannon in that shipwreck was not only smelted by people with technological capabilities far weaker than our own, but it was fired, it was used by the crew to defend Canada against the Americans. That replica doesn't have that...personal touch.

Maybe I was too cryptic. I think we should buy the painting.

But, I'm no big fan of Wolfe. He was the least crap of two crap generals. Montcalm was just really bad.

Well, I don't think there will be too many British Army guys ever rushing back to Quebec City these days. It's not like they have ever made us Brits feel welcome for the past 250 years or so.

But I've heard Montcalm has a new RPG. Rumors.

Mmm. French troops Vs the British Army. It's been done quite a few times and usually the French lose.
