The head of a B.C. religious sect facing criminal charges for practicing polygamy says he's the victim of religious persecution at the hands of provincial prosecutors.
This law has been on the books for a lot longer then these people have lived in Canada. They came here knowing they would have to follow Canada's laws.

The law won't stand up to the Charter - that's why they've never tried to prosecute. I think this prosecution will fail - like it should.
Let's be clear - multiple wives, who cares.
Issues of sexual exploitation - that's where they should have went with this.
And the irnoy is that those two charges are the ones that would actually get Blackmore serious jailtime. Even if the chrages of polygamy stick, it's not likely to result in any significant jail time.

Again agreed. I'm really rather surprised they're going ahead with this. I think it will ultimately make it legal once the law is confirmed as unconstitutional.

If it does pass it will be interesting to see how they deal with the issue of brides under 18. We've already seen governments take Jehova's Witness children away from parents that wouldn't allow blood transfusions due to religious beliefs.
I'd say time for some changes but these people are fully aware of their choices and freely exploit the charter in Canada. Not the first time people who move here exploit it.

Yeah, but that's a separate issue.
Physical health vs. emotional/mental health. Two different cans of worms there, although I'm sure all groups would use a ruling to create a loop hole for their own benefit.
I'd love to see this stopped though. It's sickening.
twisted group like this. Those kids are the ones going to be paying for it.
I thought all that BS was left in the States.
That's one sick set up though. I hope the system makes this stick and sets a precedent.

Problem is that with charges of sexual exlpoitation there either needs to witnesses or accusors, two things of which there are neither.
Agreed. Both would fail.
