Which famous Canadian made an earth-shaking discovery?

J. Tuzo Wilson, the world-renowned Canadian geophysicist (and former Director General of the Ontario Science Centre) developed the theory of Plate Tectonics in the 1960s.

This theory describes the continual motion of the large, free-floating fragments that make up the Earth's crust. As these slow-moving plates drift apart, smash together or slide past each other, they can cause earthquakes, volcanic eruptions and the growth of new mountains.

In 1978, Dr. Wilson was awarded the Vetlesen Prize, the Earth Sciences equivalent of the Nobel Prize, for his ground-breaking work.
