Both Harper and Ignatieff stand out as big targets in the Canadian progressive leaning cultural landscape. It will be interesting to see how moderate liberals (and conservatives) react to Ignatieff (especially at the CBC!). Anyhow, I only see Layton gaining more ground.

I'm going to go with #2. Harper was likely getting used to the Liberals bending over and didn't expect them find their backbone again. I just don't know about that exact logic. I see having Rae as leader only serving to lose more ground for the libs. They've lost the west. Rae would be a hard sell in Ontario and probably lose seats for them due to his own personal history or vote splitting with the NDP.
