Did some more checking on this. According to the rules of the fund, any proceeds from funded projects go back into the fund. So Senator Joyal didn't benefit personally. Yea, some people support them. But a lot of people don't support them, and actually believe they are harmful. Dion and the vast majority of his caucus agreed with the second group, and I think it was the right decision.

The fund was put in place by a committee that contained both Liberals and Conservatives. It was decided that rather than simply distributing the funds among the offices equally, they would create a special fund so that Senators with extra projects would be required to at least have them approved by ...

Liberal's brought in the Charter of Rights and Freedoms which guarantees, among other things, the right to life and the right to equality. Why on earth would we defend something as repugnant as Gender based killings?

It was a Liberal government in Ontario that shot down religious tribunals.
