Many Indigenous people in the Northwest Territories are advocating the use of traditional names for people, places, lakes and rivers, in place of terms imposed during colonization.

Two official names for everything. the "colonial" names, and whatever names the local indigenous population considers traditional at the time.

There's a lot of bad blood and history between the Cree and Dene here. This used to be Dene land until the Cree drove them out.

Why don't you folks just get on with letting the NWT and Nunavut secede and then they can name their landmarks whatever the hell the Chinese and Russians tell them to?

Can we sell them to China? Instead of the Ottawa whities they can enjoy Chinese overlordship as much as the Africans are learning to do lately.

Nunavut can't secede, they would immediately collapse, since they basically run off federal money. NWT was doing well last time I heard, but there's all those pesky white folks living there.

Just as the Quebec Cree had no interest in Quebec sovereignty, threatened their own referendum to re-join Canada if Quebec voted to leave, no FN "nation" is interested in actually seceding. Just full sovereignty with continued cash from the govt. Basically same as the Quebec separatists.

The Chinese over-lordship has taken over Vancouver so might as well sell the rest of Canada.

I don't see what the big deal would be about changing the name. It's not like Canada hasn't adopted many Native names for various towns and cities and waterways etc, so it's not like a Native name for the lake would be out of place.

Just get used to saying place names that are 85 characters long. Who do we side with for place names too? There is a long history in the west of Crees fighting with Blackfoot and Dene over territory and changing the names of places they conquered. The use of Slavey and Slave was a translation of the Cree word to describe the Dene they conquered.

NWORNG! Only whites ever had slaves. Your saying otherwise is a major macro-micro-aggression! Check yourself in at the main entrance of the camp for immediate re-education and sensitivity training!

I think we should side with Cree due to its stretch over the country and the amount of speakers it has. I think many of these languages should see support, but Cree as a national language would be interesting to me.

Now... Which Cree, is the question,

Idiotic. We're now going to have people suing to get service in Cree? Manufacturers have to put Cree on all their products? And all the non-Cree speaking FN's will have a major shit fit.

I don't have that big a problem with using native names where it makes sense. But making FN languages official is just stupid.

Two languages is bad enough, but at least they are commonly spoken around the world and ties us into two large blocks of countries. Adding a language only a handful of people speak is indeed that stupid. Especially when it will get all the other "Nations" clamoring to have their language added too.
