If he can afford $1200/mo. rent, welfare must be pretty generous in Ontario. Here in the Lower Mainland, with our high rents, he could certainly find permanent accommodation in the suburbs for less than that.

There was another article about people being evicted from a long stay hotel. Is this the same hotel or even the same city?



Not sure if this is in the same area you live andyt but any idea what the rent on an apartment would be? I looked into a long stay hotel before and it ends up costing more then to rent some apartments here in Austin. Not all mind you some apartments are so freaking expensive at the moment that they make a long stay hotel like the above look dirt cheap.

I'm just wondering if this guy might not be better off renting an apartment. It all comes down to the price of rent in the area.

This guy looks like someone who actually needs it. What pisses me off is that the Syrians will be getting welfare and a place to live while this guy ends up on the curb.

Based on the figures welfare pays for one adult with one child and two adults with two children, I'd hazard a guess they're receiving between $1000-$1200/mo for people. A single person with no kids gets around $700/mo.

All this talk of eviction brings back some bitter memories for Andy. He hasn't forgiven Gruff Bros. Inc. for the way they treated him.

I understand people living in SRO hotels who can't afford any more rent, ie the bottom of the ladder. But the rent this guy is paying should certainly get him a basement suite somewhere, probably for less. I doubt if rents are higher in TO than Vancouver. Living in a hotel when you don't have to doesn't make much sense.

In Toronto, $1200/mo rent is cheap. A one bedroom apartment in the city center will run you anywhere from $1200-$1750 with the average being around $1500/mo. Outside of the city center you're still looking at an average of $1140/mo for a one bedroom.

Average - but he could look at places below average. And don't they have people renting out their basements in Toronto? Think about it - where do the individuals who only get $700 a month go? There must be cheaper accommodation than a 1200 a month hotel room.
