the mufti says chess "wastes time and money and causes rivalry and enmity" because it makes rich people poor and poor people rich
Oh for sure. I mean we've all seen those rich Chess Champion celebrities strutting around like their shit don't stink. And talk about rivalries and enmity, you should have seen the fist fights when I was in Chess Club. Man, I've even seen people lose an eye when someone threw a bishop at them.

Some Twitter users mocked Grand Mufti Sheikh Abdelaziz Al Sheikh, saying chess is an intelligent game and that is why conservative clerics decry it.
    Sounds about right.

Sounds like his "thinking" is on par with the fundie dipshits back in the 1980's who lobbied Congress to ban heavy metal and Dungeons & Dragons. Busybody dickheads - every religion's got them. :|

The earliest predecessor of the game probably originated in India, before the 6th century AD; a minority of historians believe the game originated in China. From India, the game spread to Persia. When the Arabs conquered Persia, chess was taken up by the Muslim world and subsequently spread to Southern Europe.

    Ironic.

There's a story that the inventor was asked by the ruler what he wanted as a reward. The inventor asked for one grain of wheat on the first square, two on the second, 4 on the third, and so forth. Turned out there wasn't enough wheat in the kingdom, so the king just cut the inventor's head off for being a smart aleck.

I guess all religions have their nutty ideas and zealots to promote them, but the real problem here is identification of the religion with the state, giving it power to inflict its idiocy on the populace.

Islam is an all-encompassing religious, political, economic, and legal system. There is no such thing as secular governance in Islam. It isn't possible.
