Guessing she is not a status Indian, building off the reserve land.

I guess some people figure the rules just don't apply to them.

Sure it's public land if I want to hunt, fish, hike, pick berries, bird-watch etc. But "public" doesn't mean that anybody can do just anything they like with it.

Technically, no one is allowed to build a permanent or semi-permanent structure on crown (public) land. If you could, there would be thousands and thousands of squatters' shacks, and hunting and fishing shacks, on crown land all over Northern Ontario. Maybe there was a time when the gov't could have quietly ignored what Darlene Necan was doing, but that's not possible now. If the reserve is just up the road, maybe that's the best solution for her?

She should have just built on the reserve to begin with. Twit...

If crown land were free for the taking, we'd all be building on it.

I'm leaning towards cutting this person some slack, especially if she has to do something like this because she's ended up on the losing side of the usual bullshit reserve politics.
