I was going to say that this is good news till I remembered the horrific 8 year war these two countries conducted back in the early 80's and the violent rhetoric they used to justify their atrocities back then.

Now, I can't help but wonder if this guy being there is going to precipitate payback for the Sunni's after their years supporting Saddam in that conflict and their abuse of the Shite community while he was in power. Either way, this may just be the first step into the abyss for Iraq, leading into sectarian violence throughout the whole region as countries pick sides and what may turn out to be the worst part is that the Americans may have actually picked sides in what is likely going to become a sectarian war by treating with their old nemesis.

Time will tell. From what I've read, Iran is mostly interested in keeping safe the various Shiite shrines and tombs than in propping up the Maliki govt.

Let's hope so because if they go after the Sunni Civilians in the North under the guise of hunting down the jihadists it's gonna get ugly real fast. But it just occurred to me that they have the ISIL trapped between Baghdad and Damascus if Assad and the Maliki Gov't play their cards right.

As long as no more Americans go to die for nothing over there I don't care what they do to each other.

Time will tell if Iran can make a difference but that clock is ticking fast!

The Iranians along with the US and others have stated time and again for the Iraqi Prime Minister to treat Sunni's & Kurds fairly. He has done the opposite- Jailing thousands of Sunni's in secret prisons.
He laid the building blocks for this uprising.

The Iranians have said this? I'm surprised. I would have thought they'd like nothing better to have greater control of southern Iraq, or even just take it over.
