There is very little that is not on the menu in China. Even in ancient times, there is something known as the eight treasures of Chinese cuisine.

    bear paws,
    bird's nest,
    Shark-wing,
    sea cucumbers,
    elephant trunk,
    camel's hump,
    deer tail,
    monkey brain

These were at one time considered to be the pinacle of what the world had to offer in terms of sustenance. It should be noted that in most cases, the part of animal which is considered most valueable is the part that makes that animal unique.

Eastern medicine also involves attributing different medicinal properties to rare and unique animals.

I don't really see that the way we feel about them eating cats or dogs is any different from the way Hindus feel about us eating cows, or Jews and Muslims feel about us eating pigs.

Our love for our pets is strictly cultural and this really doesn't bother me, even though I am an animal lover. I heard pot-belly pigs make good pets too but it won't stop me from enjoying a BLT sandwich.

The Chinese are just being practical by eating the dogs after they harvest the fur to use on fashions for export to the West.

So I guess when Muslims start getting all pissed off about our Rib Fests, we should bow down to pressure because they don't dig what we eat.
