They are upset by the facts? Sorry, but every native I've known not only fits this description, but admits to it!
The solution here is not to hire native guides at all. Problem solved.

Given that statement it'd be my guess that the Chief would prefer to see some money change hands before he accepts any apologies.
Wonder how many of the Lodge's clients have a booze problem? Are they trying to push booze on the guides, like so many drunks will do? A more rational approach would be for the Lodge to determine who has a booze problem among their staff and try to prevent them from being plied with booze. In fact it may just be good policy to have the guides not be allowed to drink while on the job, including at night, since they're supposed to keep the clients safe and all.
