I don't get it. What did this kid stand to gain by stealing 900 SIN numbers? Did he just do it because he could? What is the point of that crime?

It is the most important information in identity fraud. With your name and address, the can apply for accounts and credit products.

He better not try anything funny with my number for his sake. I rented "Above the Law" from Blockbuster and it was sent to collections in 1993. I moved and forgot about it until I got a notice in the mail like 15 years later. He tries anything funny with my number and they will shut him down.

    Swarm! Swarm!

There are black markets for such information. A valid SIN number can net $1.50 - $2 each. Credit card numbers can go for $100.

He's a 19 yr old computer geek. He did it to see if he could.

However, the vulnerability window was far longer than the 6 hours CRA admits to, and they have no way of knowing how many other SINs were stolen. They only happened to be watching the site when this kid got in there.

As for this young adult not a teen why not give him a job putting his obvious skills to use.
