If they can't be made to do so, by all means sell them off.
The problem with the CBC was it was mandated to bring TV to every part of Canada, regardless of whether the location is profitable. Their mandate makes it impossible to operate within their means.
"DanSC" said The CBC is mandated to bring TV service to every part of Canada, but is it mandated to bring programming?
There's a big difference between operating broadcast infrastructure and creating programming.
The CRTC gives Canadian content minimums to all stations. Most every network produces it's own Canadian content, even if it's just news or sports broadcasts. Sometimes they make good stuff, like Stargate SG-1 or Orphan Black.
"andyt" said don't forget about the radio - to me a more important part of the CBC. Doesn't earn dime one.
Hear hear! It's so much better than listening to all the fart jokes and crappy music on other radio stations.

And back in the 30's that was a laudable mandate. Nowadays most everybody gets their content through the 'net, satellite, or cable, from Windsor right up into the territories.

This is off topic, but I couldn't walk past it.
Yayyyyy Orphan Black! That little actress from Saskatchewan is a freaking chameleon. She's going to be our Meryl Streep.
I watched one of those old news reel type programs called the 50's about life in Canada during that time and one part of the program was about TV in Canada.
Apparently when TV came to Canada there were a myriad of stations and networks that wanted to go online but, CBC as the Voice of Canada petitioned Parliament successfully to prevent that and became the giant tax grabbing, patronage appointing, revenue depleting organization we now see.
Plain and simple. They pretty much had a monopoly on TV in Canada for decades and now that it's become an open market despite their best efforts, they can't compete and are using the same tired old excuses as to why they shouldn't have to be self sufficient to keep feeding that Iron Rice bowl.
YES!!! I am a fan of LESS NEWS, ZERO DOCUMENTARIES, and MORE CSI: (wherever) and MORE REAL HOUSEWIVES OF ATLANTA!! If that's what "the market" wants, than only that should be available!!!! Why fight the growing idiocracy when you can embrace it and make tons of money?
Regarding VIA Rail, I am honestly open to entertaining ideas. Business Class is ok, but in economy, the food is literally the same shitty gas-station/vending machine fare (microscopic sliver of baloney between 2 slabs of stale bread)but costs $7 instead of $1.99
Canada Post: You know who uses that the most? Business! Go ahead and a privatize it so you can impose a 'job-killing rate increase' if you want. I havent mailed anything in years.
CBC shut down over the air transmission in our area. So now our community group rebroadcasts it on our own nickel. So you DON'T have to pay to watch HNIC or the news. So guess who's pocket the money comes from to fund our community rebroadcast? Yeah - you got it. So much better to pick your left pocket instead of your right and call it Conservative ideology! It seems to be everyone thinks other people should have to pay for cable/satellite because they CHOOSE TO (and are pissed at 500 channles of SHIT)

Hey, if you want to live in Buttfuck Nowhere Town it's your choice. If you want services and amenities..MOVE.
I truly hope I live long enough to witness the demise of the CBC. Despite the image below, all that is required to end the CBC is to cease feeding it tax dollars.
