Why I No Longer Feel Comfortable Wearing a Poppy | Madeleine Fry

To me, as a person suffering from PTSD, I remember every day of the year. Remembrance Day is a day that I try not to remember. This is probably one of my biggest triggers and hardest days of the year.

The skank who wrote that drivel purportedly specializes in an eclectic mix of music, religion and African politics....maybe she should stick with what she knows.

Clearly it would have been better to let the bad guys of history have their way.

Truly lost on her that she has the ability to wax idiotic because of two generations that were slaughtered for their country.

I get her point about how Remembrance Day can be and has been co-opted as a bit of a propoganda "support the troops at all costs" kind of thing, but there is more than enough real and honourable sentiment behind it that it still needs to be respected.

I don't see a reason to call her a skank though...

Maddie Fried seems to have a grudge with the British. She didn't even mention Flanders field and says we were conscripts to war? She's definitely a candidate for the White poppy gang. Since when is Rememberence Day only a British thing? Does the skank live in Canada or the UK?

Most, if not all Christian Pacifists have been anti war and anti military their whole lives so her claims that she now no longer "not feel's comfortable wearing a poppy" is just literary license and if I were to hazard a guess it would be that she's felt this way alot longer than just recently especially given statements like this:



So, does she want equal face time for the Nazi's, the Japanese Military Cabal or just the poor downtrodden Taliban and Al Qaeda fighters in Afghanistan and Iraq?

Although, it's nice to see that she has a forum to express her views because, had any of the people she is championing as victims won the conflicts the British and Commonwealth Forces were involved in, I'm pretty sure that because of either her sex, her ideology or her inability to comprehend the necessity of free militaries throughout history, she wouldn't have survived long enough to annoy us with her pacifist ramblings.

So, agree or disagree with her, allowing articles like this no matter how we feel about them, is just one of the myriad of reasons why the militaries of democracies fight and die.

Every year someone trots out this BS. I'm sure the white poppy gang will be in the news soon if they haven't gotten their 5 minutes of airtime already.

Add this to the list.

Not sure if it's worse than some Muslim people protesting Remembrance Day services and burning poppies.

Take a look at who the message of "support the troops at all costs" comes from, and you'll find it's not the troops themselves. I've been going to the Legion Rememberance day ceremony since I was but an ankle biter and I bet I can write down right now almost every word that will be said, save for a few of the things like the Pastor's Blessing that change every year, and not once will anything remotely like that come up.

I think it's a reverse Politically Correct thing, like those people who change 'Christmas' so as not to offend anyone. Someone in the crowd thinks that we need to 'support the troops', no matter their actions. And that isn't what Rememberance day is about.


Rememberance Day always has been about fallen soldiers who died in war. I don't ever recall anyone specifying who's soldiers or what side they were fighting for.

I do remember this nice German fellow who comes to the Legion, sometimes in Uniform, and is treated like any other soldier who served his country.

Remembrance Day is about remembering the soldiers' sacrifices. Not some geopolitical BS.
The problem is this woman grew up feeling safe and has no idea what it would feel like not to be. Should send her to one of the local Legions and see what the 90 year old vets have to say about it....

You do need to support the troops at all costs. They are not the ones who start the wars. Thye just go when they are told, no matter how bad. Nobody is out at Memorial Park in North Vancouver shoutiong "Let's hear it for British Imperialism! War is awesome, YEAH!"

Soccer tourney and hockey tourney on Remembrance Day this year. Not sure how I feel about that. OK, I guess, as long as they take their moment of silence.

Absolutely. Most of the troops I've known only pull that one out when they're trying to get laid. It mostly comes from politicians and talk show hosts who want to shut down any debate about whatever they've got the troops doing.

I agree, 100%, the problem is, all too often, the loud mouths try to equate supporting the roops with supporting what they're doing. I don't think it is the same thing at all. I think it's entirel possible to disagree with a war, or even all war, with that meaning a lessening of respect or support for those who fight.
