Perhaps the people running the excavators had sampled some of what they were smuggling?
This made me chuckle:

Sampling product?
That's a lot of ganga.
8.5 x 2000 x 16 = 272,000 ounces x $150 = $40,800,000

this is a situation where quality control and engineering should not be the same department

now factor in the losses that convenience stores will suffer as a result of a downturn in demand for doritos

It's actually really difficult to tunnel in a straight line underground. Which is why when train tunnels meet up within inches of each other under a mountian, it's a big deal.

I agree. Not such a big deal these days with GPS and sensors etc. but tunneling through the mountains of BC and the like, even 25 years ago was quite something.
It's actually really difficult FOR MEXICANS to tunnel in a straight line underground.
I say this because just about everyone else in North America knows to buy a laser or just use the GPS on their smart phones to dig a straight and accurate tunnel.
You can also stop by the hardware store and buy one of these on the cheap and dig your drug tunnel with an accuracy of 1/8" :

So, how come the Mexicans can get "high speed" rail but we can't?
Canada used to have high speed rail.

And Canada knows how to build light rail...now you just need to build it in Canada.

the frost heaves would play havoc with high speed rail outside the Windsor to Montreal corridor
This is why the KJV Bible speaks to this topic in Psalm 151:
Thus saith the Lord.
the frost heaves would play havoc with high speed rail outside the Windsor to Montreal corridor
... as would all of them level crossings, bye.
