The Canadian military has been secretly test-driving a $620,000 stealth snowmobile in its quest to quietly whisk troops on clandestine operations in the Arctic.

How Canadian can you get, eh? Do the drivers get to wear "invisibility tuques"?

If the headline was Canadian government testing electric snowmobile for arctic operations it wouldn't be much of a headline now would it?

Well yes, it's the winter white camo gear. Fucking effective to I might add.

And when that does little to reduce the noise?

$620,000 is cheap to design a new vehicle and build some prototypes.

    8) I wonder what it will look like.
I like the sound of a good sled but the best part is they smell terrific when they are waiting for you to get on.

What's the point. If the tree huggers are right the Gov't should be building stealth ATV's unless of course, we're gonna deploy to the Antarctic. :D

The title is misleading - the snowmobile itself is not $620k. That price includes the testing for it as well as the snowmobile.

In one test, military personnel used sound-meter readings to compare the prototype's noise performance against two gas-powered snowmobiles.

Another trial saw the machine driven at a steady speed on a mix of flat terrain and hilly snow-covered roads until batteries died.

Soldiers wielding a radar gun also tested the stealth snowmobile's acceleration as it raced 100 metres down a flat, snow-packed track.

I read the story and realize it's not just the price of the 1 snowmobile, just the idea of our government spending over half a million dollars on testing a "stealth" snowmobile is what sends shivers up my back. I don't care if it's gas, electric or nuclear powered, there just has to be something more practical than a "stealth" snow machine.

$620 000 is a pittance in the grande scheme of things, especially given the significant tactical advantage being silent on the move would give.
