I knew grapefruit interacted, but I had no idea that it was so widespread! Guess I'll have to give it up as a breakfast food, as I am on cholesterol meds. :(

Grapefruit and medication don't mix well. It should be on the package tho.
I don't like grapefruit and I don't take any medication, but info like this should be common knowledge.

Old news for some and it's also something every pharmacist should be explaining to all new patients that would be affected by interactions.....grapefruit or other meds included.

Ya, I have had warning labels about it before. I think Grapefruit is about the nastiest vegetable/fruit there is(not diluted with other stuff anyway), so no problems here.

Too bad. Doc will have to proscribe something else.
THe fucking grapefruit juice is probably better for you than the medicine anyways.

    Good point.

    Plus, there is this...
Other fruits, including Seville oranges, limes and pomelos, also have furanocoumarins, and while theyre not as well studied as grapefruit, the same negative effects can be inferred, Bailey noted.

So, it appears that once further studies are done there may be other fruits that will be added to the list of "bad" fruits to consume while taking certain medications.

I find it rather sad that natural foods that have health benefits would have to be eliminated from one's diet due to taking man-made medications prescribed to help one fight or control a health condition. :!:

I remember watching a program a few years back about grapefruit fibre and how it is actually more effective than any medication we have for cleaning the pipes of plaque build up. Fome old fellow had clogged arteries in his neck and he went on this program. He went from 80% - 90% blockage down to 30% in a year. What we eat should be our medicine. Natural foods don't have any nasty side effects, excepting allergies. I was on metformin, a supposed wonder drug for diabetes....only thing is, it was destroying my liver. Look at how nutritionists have flip flopped on butter and margarine, eggs, nuts and peanut butter....hell even meat and carbs from grains.

That's the problem though. Grapefruit makes statins (cholerserol drugs) work exponentially better, but the side effects of statins can be very nasty and sometimes fatal. Same with Metformin.

But you can't find white grapefruit anymore, only those pink ones. I love grapefruit. The best breakfast for me is 1/2 a grapefruit, and a glass of Whey protien drink. Now I have to give it up, but it makes sense as to why my Crestor makes me feel like I was just in a bar fight.
