Maybe we try the European model where higher-education is free. Except only the bet and brightest get in and not those who have parents with money.

That'll change their minds in a hurry.

I've been saying that for the last year.

Don't forget the 40 some % tax rates. The students may not care, but I bet theor parents and older siblings will want a talk with them once that comes out.

And while they are in University they have to maintain an average of at least 80 % to keep their subsidized education. Truth be told, rather than university being 'free', I'd sooner see the government invest in trades and tech training as early as high school. It'd be nice to see kids graduating with some skills that are marketable from day one. This includes those who are going into academic studies as well.

We have French people (from France) at my job. One of them asked me why the government doesn't want to have free University tuition since he had free tuition in France. I asked him: "why are you working here in Canada?" He said: "Because there's no job in France" I asked him: "Where do the rich study, in free Universities or in 'Grandes coles' with high tuition fees ?" He told me: "Ok, I understand your point".
