The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration formally proposed a requirement Thursday that automakers include a brake-throttle override system in all their passenger cars and light trucks to help drivers regain control when a vehicle accelerates suddenly.
    ...
Automakers would have about two years to comply once the proposal becomes final, which is expected. Some automakers might need to change their systems to comply with the new regulations. But the proposal said there should be minimal cost to the industry to implement the new requirement because almost all 2012 light vehicles sold in the U.S. have a brake-override system.
    ...
The system allows drivers to stop a vehicle if there is physical entrapment of the pedal or jamming of the throttle, Toyota spokesman Mike Michels said. Entrapment was the suspected cause of the deadly Lexus crash.

Woman dies after runaway SUV crashes into hair salon
As a family mourns the death of a young mother, police are still trying to determine why a driver lost control of his SUV, sped through a busy intersection and crashed into a hair salon Saturday.

Kendall Wiebe, 27, was taken off life-support Tuesday, three days after a 2012 Jeep Liberty plowed into the salon, which is part of the Crestview Shopping Centre at Portage Avenue and Cavalier Drive.

Police have not determined what caused the crash. Their investigation is continuing and charges could be pending against the 32-year-old male driver of the Jeep. Drugs and alcohol are not considered factors in the crash.
    ...

I met Kendall a few times, very nice girl. If this was standard in all 2012 vehicles, she'd still be here and a 4 year old girl would still have a mommy.

What if someone accelerates fast of their own doing?

Then they wouldn't be stepping on the brake and the system would not kick in. But my understanding is that the brakes on modern will overpower the engine anyways.

    Doubtful.

Considering no cause has been determined and charges may be pending against the driver, I doubt this would have done anything to save her.

Isn't this what the handbrake is for?

Doug Henry and his 12-year-old son, Nick, were headed west on Portage Avenue when they witnessed the accident. They'd stopped at the intersection of Portage and Rouge Road to make a U-turn and saw a northbound red Jeep on Rouge Road fail to slow down when it got to Portage.
"He went flying through there," Nick said.
The SUV drove through the busy intersection, up over the median and into the parking lot of the Canada Safeway and strip mall across the street.
The speeding vehicle weaved its way around parking barricades and rammed into the Ultracuts outlet in the strip mall, Henry said.
"I thought it was some kid," said Henry, who went to the scene of the crash and located the driver. It wasn't a kid, he said, but a man who got out of the Jeep.
    "He said he couldn't stop."
Henry said the driver didn't appear to be intoxicated or smell of alcohol.

I was told to put the car in neutral and use the e-brake if this happens.. Not everyone takes drivers-ed though.

If you have no brakes, it's better to put the car in the lowest gear than use neutral - it will engine brake the car. And use the e-brake. But be careful with the latter - a friend once pulled hard on his e-brake while doing a good speed and wound up doing a donut on the road - you'll lock up your rear tires if you pull on the brake too hard.

If you have sudden acceleration, just use your brakes - they will overpower the engine and stop the car. But I think a lot of "sudden acceleration" is actually somebody stepping on the gas when they meant to step on the brake.

"This technology is typically raised as a solution to the issue of unintended acceleration. The problem is that the evidence shows this is usually a driver-error issue. In other words, the gas is being applied, not the brakes," said Jeremy Anwyl, vice chairman of auto information company Edmunds.com.

You can't fix stupid, so let's focus on the things that can be fixed. I can't see any drawbacks with this technology. To me this is a win-win situation.
