A White House spokesman said Thursday that President Barack Obama believes women should be admitted as members to the all-male Augusta National, home of the Masters golf tournament.

Women playing at the Augusta National??? What's next, they'll let black golfers in too? 8O

***In reality, Lee Elder became the first black player to qualify for the Masters in 1975. But it took another 15 years for the first black player to be admitted as a member to Augusta National.

It's a private club, and I believe the members should be able to allow who ever they want. I can't really see the attraction of no women, but it's their business.

Well, if you want to keep being sponsored, you might as well join the modern world too, where women are CEO's of big companies. Welcome to the 21st century!

But on the other hand, they did change policy to accept black members.
I guess it's better to be called misogynistic than racist.

I don't really care one way or another here. I'm sure that eventually, they will give in to public pressure and accept them, just like they did for black players.

I can understand the attraction of having no women.
Sort of like those water buffalo meetings. :D

I doubt the club is sponsored. The tournament is, and sure, people are free to withdraw their support. That's how it's supposed to work.

What kills me is that the same women pushing to get in want to have their own little girls clubs and not allow men. We have women only gyms. The Boy Scouts were accused of sexism until they allowed girls, the Girl Scouts are girl only, because "girls need a place of their own." I know that men are a lot more fun to hang around with than women, but come on.

To Raydan - If they wanted to have only white people in their club, that's their privilege too. If they want to join the 21st century, good for them. I'm not aware of any black people only clubs, but there certainly are women only clubs. But ultimately private means private - you can do what you want.

    Sponsors have no bearing.

The 'Masters' and it's sponsorship are run by the PGA, and has no bearing on the Augusta private membership.

As long as Augusta continues to let non members play in PGA turney's, the PGA won't care. And, until Augusta starts to lose their current male members over this, they won't care what pressure is put on them.

I guess it's cyclical. In grade school, the girls want to tag along with the boys, the boys just want to be left alone. Then puberty hits and the boys start chasing the girls. I guess once the boys get old enough they revert to their childhood.

The only thing I could find on "why" they started admitting black members...

A nearby club in Alabama, Shoal Creek, was unable to host a PGA tournament due to a national ruling that clubs hosting a PGA tournament must not practice racial segregation. During this controversy, Augusta National quietly admitted its first African-American member.

Maybe Augusta should do what the Ladies Golf Club in Thornhill, Ontario, does?

Only women can be members, but men can get 'Guest Card Holders'.

Let's you play the course twice a month (maximum), but you don't get any benefits of being a member.

Whoops, they now have an Gold Guest Card Holder, that allows for unlimited plays per month.

So all it would take for them to start accepting female members would be that the PGA refuse to host their tournaments at clubs that practice sexual segregation.

...as a side note, The Masters is a huge part of Augusta's financing.

Augusta allows women to play if they are invited by a "male member".

    ***Sounds dirty, doesn't it? 8O
