The Dutch Cabinet moved a step closer Friday to banning the burqa, making good on an election promise that is largely symbolic but has broad public support.
What pisses me off (what I read in the Dutch papers) is that the police don't think it really matters, so they will not enforce it. WTF??? You are not supposed to have a damned opinion, you are supposed to enforce the law, and this is one!
I am pretty sure btw, that when I walk into a gas station in the middle of the night with a ski mask on, you guys will arrest me. But not when I am wearing a burqa?
We see the same thing here with police and small amounts of pot. People aren't arrested and processed for pot possession too much which means the police can concentrate on real crime.
This is just anothemeaninglessss law which won't be enforced because cops have better things to do.

That is not what they said. They said they "don't see why wearing a ski mask or a burqa is a safety hazard, so we will not enforce it". I'm sorry, but that is not up to them.
But they WILL fine you when you go 105 on a highway where 100 is max.

Hence my point about pot. The same can be said with municiple bylaws - rarely enforced (sometimes maddeningly)
Good stuff and about time, robberies, muggings, car jackings, home invasions, murders and all sort of violent crime by burqa clad women was getting way out of hand in Netherlands !

The police won't arrest you for walking into a gas station with a ski mask on, there's no law against it. In The Netherlands, there is now (or will be soon). Ski mask and burqa are equivalent.
The burqa ban was not for religious reasons, but for safety reasons. (article says so, even)
Deputy Prime Minister Maxime Verhagen said the Cabinet agreed on plans to ban the head-to-toe Islamic gown along with other forms of face-covering clothing including ski masks. The legislation must still be approved by both houses of the Dutch Parliament, a process that could take months.

Bren, you do know that is a bunch of horse shit right. No, it's not. There are over a million Muslims in The Netherlands. Only 300 or so wear a burqa. Most of them wear a headscarf, and there is nothing wrong with that.
Do you know how scary it is to work at a gas station, and someone with a burqa walks in at 3 am? VERY scary. Just as scary as if it would be someone with a ski mask or a full face helmet on (not riding a motor bike). You don't want people working at your store wearing a burqa. You don't want people working at your bank wearing a burqa. Or a ski mask. Or a full face helmet.
The article says security reasons, not safety. It also says it will ban the full length gown, not just the face covering. That apply to maxi coats too? Evening gowns?
I don't support a full ban, just where necessary for reasons of security - broadly defined. Including the right of any private property owner to ban them, with no bullshit about religions rights.
But you gotta ask yourself, why are these women so eager to move to Holldand, the West, civilization in the first place if they want to dress like that? And why are those countries so eager to allow them in?

You could have a law that bans them in specific locations. Or just allow the owner to ban them - ie "no face coverings allowed on premises. Police will be called" Why ban them totally? And especially why ban that long gown they wear - as I said, are they going to ban long coats and evening gowns too?
The primary concern I have is safety.
There is going to be a problem eventaully of where does the balance of freedom of religion end and public safety begin.
