It'll never happen. We have to establish bases on the continental shelf first, to see how viable they are under adverse conditions. These'll be testing grounds before a moon base can be built and inhabited.
"Hyack" said It's an election promise..... "Elect me and I'll".......insert bullshit promise here..... Which means there is no way in HELL this will ever happen!!
It's evidence of the contempt that politicians have for the voter. They think people are stupid enough to actually take this bovine excrement seriously. Unfortunately, they're right.
Well, it's all the voter knows. It's what plays on their TV, it's what they read in the paper, it's what their (boring) friends talk about. Convinced that such few ideas are the only ideas viable. Then there's the fallacy that because everyone votes for these parties they are doing something right, that they are properly representing the people, as opposed to convincing them that there is just no other choice.
Democrat or Republican. Such powerful beasts that it is not the people that decide what they are, but them who decide what the people are. Sure, social opinion changes their stances from time to time, but there is a massive disconnect. It takes a long time for the parties to catch up to the people when the people decide to do the changing.
Replicated world-wide, but America is a whole different reality show...
I'm not saying that Gingrich will follow through like Kennedy, but it'd be nice for the US and allies in space to have a grand plan to further our presence in the solar system.

Humanity's future does lay somehere out there. it's in our genes to explore and desire new horizons. However, I believe that future is not our immediate future but something that is distant centuries ahead. Oceanic colonization in our near future, orbital installations in the next century or so and then the beginnings of lunar colonization by carving habitats within the moon, and then Mars and carving habitats in the asteroids within the next five centuries. Slow and steady wins the race and minimizes casualty rates through misadventure.
Gingrich says (something GRANDIOSE! yet ineffably stupid......). A promise like this is almost as moronic as Michelle Bachmann saying that if she were elected President she single-handedly make gasoline cost less than $2 a gallon again.
My usual response to an average Gingrich speech, or to a typical GOP debate for that matter,
The moon base will be sponsored by Coca-Cola.
The astronauts will look like race car drivers.
