A Nova Scotia man who has had his driver's licence revoked even though he doesn't have a medical condition or a driving conviction says the people in charge of the Registry of Motor Vehicles have too much unchecked power.

I think there is probably something more to this case than "they just don't like me".

The article suggests he had a problem with anger management what what has been termed "road rage".

He may have well been something illegal here, but I think there is more that is not being said.

If I were a betting man, I'd say he's a perpetual asshole that's had more than his fare share of road rage incidents and people calling or filing complaints against vehicles with his plates on them.

I don't doubt that he may be an asshole or douche bag but he's not been found guilty of anything in the eyes of the law. Possibly loosing your job because you don't have a license is very serious and shouldn't be possible because of hearsay or complaints. I bet when you dig down a bit farther, there's a personal link between an alleged victim who complained and someone in the Registry of Motor Vehicles.

Punished person who is trying to imagine that he was a poor victim. There is processing procedure and I suspect that this man is not understanding it or don't want to understand. All he need is a good lawyer for explanation.

I'll go for that one, and a nice abuse of power it is.

Notice the skank chatting on the phone who started it all
didn't seem to get a ticket for her idiocy. ;)

Well as they tell us, driving is a privilege not a right. You can lose your license if a cop deems you've been drinking, even tho again, you are not convicted of it. They do need to institute a system that is less arbitrary for taking licenses. At the same time, I'm glad the suspend the licenses of people who are driving impaired. I wonder if this woman was connected somehow - ie she's not just an average person but knows somebody in Motor Vehicles or govt.

We have a system in BC where people can phone in and report dickhead drivers. I'm not sure what happens after that tho - my guess is you get too many reports and they come and give you a stern talking to, but don't actually do anything. I wonder if they had lots of reports of this sort of behavior by this guy, not just this instance. In fact that seems to be the case: "He told me, 'I took it away because of an independent investigation that we did. We had people come in off the street and make a complaint about you and we investigated it and this is why we're taking your licence away,'" Wilbur recalled.

Exactly. Imagine the furor if next week a scandle broke out about a jerk who was well known for road rages and dangerous driving behavior that that authorities ignored killed somebody by tailgating them.

There may well have been something illegal going on with his license being lifted, but there is something more with the story and this guys behavior.

When you complain of possible impaired driver or dickhead the police go look for him or visit him. In this case that didn't happen and there was NO police involvement. If they visit or find the driver and there are signs of impairment while in his car they will do what they normally do and charge them. If they don't actually see the dickhead speeding or weaving through traffic they can only talk to the person about it. They may be able to charge the person with whatever based on the witness but I doubt it would stick, since the witness isn't a trained professional in that field. Years ago while cycling a crazy lady stopped us and gave us a piece of her mind........which she could hardly spare. We called the cops and they paid her a visit to set her straight. Not much they could do by then although she admitted stopping us.

It's a scary area of the law. Same with confiscating property based on drug or other criminal charges. Those charges may never be proven, but the property remains confiscated. I think we (as in our govt) allow ourselves too much leeway for expediency with situations like this. It seems too dangerous a slope to go down. But then we face exactly the same sorts of dilemmas when fighting terrorism.

I think it is ridiculous. He has not been proven guilty in court of any offence, so he should not have his license revoked. No matter what asshole he is. The drivers license guy is a citizen. Would be nice if I could just take every asshole's license away. Believe me, no one but me would be driving here anymore. Of course after my own "private investigation", which entails as much as "you cut me off, gimme your license" or "you are allowed to go 80 here, why the fuck do you do 70? Gimme your license".

    So there

Bloody immigrants come here and try to take over.

What do you think of 90 day license suspensions based on a cop's say so that you were drunk?

That too, is imo ridiculous when it is just his saying so. The cop should prove it by blood test (refusing to take that test would result in the same punishment as you would get when proven guilty of driving drunk).
