Really people, are you that terrified?

    This is the umbrella...
...think I'm "partially" blaiming the manufacturer in this case.
Looks more like a katana to me though.

The movie "Paul Blart: Mall Cop," was filmed at the Burlington Mall.

Looks like they chose the right place to film the movie.

Ya I know places where you can buy those, still it looks nothing like a rifle.

Now if he had this one...

If he wore it over his shoulder with the handle up, it could initially look very much like he's carrying a rifle. Not every mall shopper is so highly trained in the matter as you, Guy. But I wonder what the questioning by the cops consisted of. They should be able to tell a rifle from an umbrella pretty quickly.

I thought it looked like a Samurai sword.

I call BS on that one, we are talking about , I'll grant you that some mall patrons might not be familiar with rifles but here are some other things that also look like the umbrella.

    These are Iron Curtain Rods

That's what I came up with in 5 min, the responsible thing would be to go and get a better look at what he is carrying to make sure it really is a rifle. Calling the police and shutting down a mall because you think the long, thin, black roddy thing is a gun, was a painfully stupid move.

That would require a mass society that isn't terrified of their own shadows.

Not so much in America. I too would think it was a Katana. And might still call security about some guy carrying a sword.

Me too. I could see if he was carrying around something like this:

Now, who on earth would come up with something like that?

Excuse me sir, is that a gun?
Why yes it is, let me show you.

...and then the shooting starts, and you're the first casualty.

That was a stupid suggestion, GF.

The only reason to get closer would be so that YOU'D have a better shot to take him down. Shoot first, ask questions later. This is the USA, even if it was just an umbrella, they'd pin a medal on you for bravery. :D

I guarantee you if this guy whipped this off his back and pointed it at a cop, he'd get himself shot, since they've killed people for pointing cell phones and TV remotes at them.
