The federal government has been telling Tamil refugee claimants to pay tens of thousands of dollars to the smugglers who brought them here -- or Canada won't let them out of jail.

Dosanjh said that if a Liberal government is elected they would examine repealing the rule.

The only thing a Liberal government would do is change it so that the GOVERNMENT would pay the smugglers on the illegals behalf.

This whole thing has been nothing but one sad joke after another.

Isn't this the same government that so adamantly wants to make human trafficking illegal that they'll make it more difficult for legitimate refugees to stay here, while harassing them to leave?

    These people are not legimate.

Nor are they refugees, they arrived after the war was over.

How do you know they're not legitimate?

Because previous Tamil "refugees" have since gone back to visit. The war has been over for quite some time now.

Well, at least we know for sure that these people are being smuggled into Canada and what a better way to find out who these smugglers are by making the "refugees" pay up.

"I think that's ridiculous," said Kenney. "Paying a smuggler is an illegal activity. The government of Canada wouldn't countenance facilitating someone paying their debt."

About ten minutes later, the minister addressed the issue again.

"It's quite legitimate for our lawyers to take that position," he said. "We make no apology for ensuring that the law is enforced."

Bwaaaaaaaaaa haaaa haaa ahhhh haaaa haaa haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

Maybe I don't understand something, but Canadian government supports smuggling.

If you're not an insane Hollywood actor, you'll damn well clear your debts before you come here.

Besides them coming here after the war was over, than shortly after taking trips back to there home country to visit family. Government did reports on that. It's just more people abusing our system.

If Stephen Harper had ordered all those assholes deported back to Sri Lanka the same day they arrived here I'd wager he'd be at least 5% higher in the polling right now. That's exactly what should have been done and anyone who isn't a politician trying to pad the ethnic votes in their ridings knows it.

    You understand correctly.

If you want a different answer, just wait 10 minutes.

I agree, I think it might be higher than 5% though.

The Tamil vote surely can't be large enough to pander to it. It's not like the majority of southeast Asians want anything to do with them. Supporting Tamils would alienate politicans from the bulk of their southeast Asian voters in most ridings.
