The girl lives with her father and brother. The father was given custody after he divorced the girl's mother, the newspaper said, despite having been convicted of another sexual offense against another daughter from another woman. He served two years in jail for that crime.

Oh, my fucking lord. Their social services must be even more fucked up than ours. Whoever made the decision to place the girl with her father should be shot.

The age of consent is just 12?

The father served jail time for a sexual offence against another daughter and was STILL given custody of this daughter??? wtf?

Yep. And there's people who want to reduce it to 8.

I can't link to the reference material from work but the fact remains that there are some folks who think that 'normal, healthy sexuality' should be available to children on the cusp of pubescence. Those folks range from the perverted (NAMBLA) to (well meaning?) liberal social-worker types.

While they are currently in the minority and the possibility of the AOC being lowered to 8 seems preposterous, do recall that gay rights, as we know them, were considered preposterous when Anita Bryant warned about them in the early 1980's.

I won't rule this out as happening in my lifetime unless people are vigilant against it.

No offense, but don't think Canada is immune to this kind of thing:

How sad... a child having a child...

When I was 16 there was a couple I did some babysitting for when their job shifts overlapped. The mom was a nurse at the local hospital and I remember her coming home after her shift one day and telling me that she had assisted with a 13 year old girl giving birth that day. She was very distressed about it, having a young daughter of her own. Apparently the girl had a 19 year old boyfriend and that her parents were present and were about it.

In addition, the father of the 12 year old is also the father of his own grandchild, the baby this girl just had. He's in jail.
The fact that the age of consent is 12 doesn't mean a father can just go around and impregnate their daughter.
We Dutchies believe in "live and let live" and not tell kids they can't have sex till they are 35, but to raise them well and have them make their own decisions. Teen pregnancies are not as common as they are here.
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Epidemiolo ... _pregnancy

    (The Netherlands : 5 per 1000
    Canada: 16 per 1000)

Looks to me that the more prude the country, the more teen pregnancies and abortions. Funny...
