The National Hockey League's reluctance to take major steps to reduce on-ice violence may be costing the league some fans, according to a new poll obtained by CBC News.

Scrap the third man in rule, allow picks, put the red line back in, get rid of the trapazoid and have each team hire a mandatory goon, who can legally beat the crap out of anyone who takes a cheap shot and injures another teams player. Do these few simple things and you'd see alot more "hockey" and a lot less concussions.

But hey, Buttman ain't gonna do that, cause he remembers how hockey was "fast and wide open" way back in the 80's, when he was still a little tyrant busy kissing David Stern's (insert body part as required) .

What he seems to forget is that it was wide open and fast back then because the stars and all players for that matter were protected from cheap shot artists by enforcers like Cement Head Semenko.

I'd also love to see who the thousand people they surveyed were?

Probably 1000 random Canadians, most of which had no interest at all in hockey or didn't watch sports in the first place because they consider anything with more contact than chess to be too violent.

I'd send rep your way for that one if I could!

Funny thing is, your 1st paragraph is almost word for word what I wrote to the NHL and to Rattman in suggesting ways to cut down on concussions.

I'm not the least turned off by big hits or fighting. I am turned off by goonism, and not the kind you're talking about either.

When I think of the cheap shot Crosby took that finally took him out, I think back and know that if that had happened to Gretzky in his heyday, not only would Semenco have whooped up on whoever did it, but the NHL would have shit all over him too.
If Crosby does play next season, I have a feeling he won't be the player he was.

I'm glad you agree and hopefully if that's what you wrote that pimped up little twit, he'll at least have the courtesy to pay attention, but I doubt very much that he even thinks about things like this.

He's much more concerned with his "legacy" which aside from numerous failed franchises, includes his own personal delusion that he's the one responsible for bringing speed and scoring back to the game, when the reality is he's turned a hard hitting, tough game that regulated itself into a cheapshot bloodsport that no one seems to have any control over including the league, the players or the owners.

As for Crosby we'll have to see what happens. My guess is that he's gonna be another Pat Lafontaine, a great player whose career was shortened far to quickly by an idiots vision of what he thinks hockey should be.

What really pisses me off about Bettman is he's a fucking martinet. Any broadcaster(at least in Canada anyway) that dares to bad mouth the goof, no matter how true or correct they are, puts their "licence" to broadcast NHL games at risk.
I remember a few times on CBC with Ron McLean interviewing Rattman, McLean had to back off lest he offended HRM King Gary.

    GREAT POST R=UP

I agree with the above, if we take out the instigator rule and perhaps make the ice bigger to accommodate larger players, the game would be that much better. More time and space for the skilled players to work their magic.

I don't think we should slow down the game by bringing back the clutch-and-grab style hockey we saw before as that was terrible but give the guys more space on the ice with larger rinks.

I think the poll is bullshit and not indicative of real hockey fans. A larger ice size might be a good thing, not as big as the IIHF size mind you, but add a little might speed up the game. Take out the instigator rule for sure, that was never a good rule. I'm not all that unhappy with the game as it stands right now, not a fan of the point system or shootout, but the game itself is way better than the "clutch and grab" game that we used to have.

While I agree with the majority of your post, I don't agree with this "real hockey fan" mantra.

There's no such thing as a "real hockey fan" as there are all types of "fans" and they show their support differently and like different aspects of the game.

Yes, get rid of shootouts (HATE THEM), go back to 20min OTs, and bring back white jerseys for home games and darks for away.
