China now produces nearly all of the world's supply of rare earths, which are crucial for a wide range of technologies, including hard drives, solar panels, and motors for hybrid vehicles.

South Africa has just as much as China. Namibia, Zimbabwe, Botswana too. Unfortunately those places are not friendly to western companies as China is.

We have them too but our mines can't compete with China. The yuan is kept artificially low to boost exports and the safety conditions in also very low. There are accidents in China mines like once a week and I don't think they care for the miners like Chile.

Well scientist think they found a big deposit of Neodymium in Quebec which is good news. If China gets to abusive with its current monopoly nations like Japan, Korea and Germany may just outright ban the imports of rare-earth elements from China. Forcing their companies to buy the material from nations that treat the workers with a bit more respect. Thus ending China's rare-earth monopoly, they could even go farther and ban any products from China that contain rare-earth.
