Canada has withdrawn its candidacy for a seat on the UN Security Council after not gaining the required number of votes in two rounds. Germany was elected outright in the Western powers group, while Canada's withdrawal means Portugal goes through.

Does it really matter? The Big 5 have all the clout on the Security Council anyways...

It's true and the SC rarely is unanimous on anything. Vetos abound.

It does let Canada know that certain member states (mostly African and Arab)are officially not our friends, if they ever really were, although they were always happy to take our money and aid.

Our opposition to Durban 2's anti-Semitic agenda, our support of Israel and criticism of Hamas and Hezbollah, as well as our combat role in Afghanistan have annoyed those dictatorships that are used to a more wishy-washy Canadian foreign policy.

Anybody who speaks up for Israel 'aint get any votes from the Arab League or a lot of the African countries.

Maybe we shouldn't be sending aid to these states anymore who can't even vote for us. Let Portugal send the aid instead.

Good. The UN is shite. Why should we want to participate in the UN after all that the UN has done: sabotage any attempts to address global climate issues, support Israel unconditionally, vilify Venezuela, Rwanda (well, all of Africa, really), Iraq, Bosnia/Croatia, etc, etc? The UN is the most dysfunctional council in existence. Fuck 'em. Our internatational image would be best maintained by distancing ourselves from such a farce.

It should have been expected that the international community would give Harper and his shit foreign policy the global "thumbs down". Based on our track record over the past five years, we deserve to be told we're not deserving.

That's news to me, if anything I thought it was the main goal to attempt to discredit Israel and fuck them over every chance they got by biasing everything against Israel. Seems to be there habit in the past and as of lately. Maybe all the mid-east voters are worth more to the UN than Israel's one vote?

Not getting the vote of a bunch of shit hole countries means we're doing something right. Now lets find out if any of the countries that didn't vote for us are getting aid from us. However I'm not sure if we should stop giving them aid or give them more, because they might have done us a favor.

Aid should be directly linked to foreign policy.

I believe the Tory Politburo have been doing that. We should be ensuring that we get the best bang for the aid buck and we should be helping countries that we also get a good political bang for our buck in.

Throwing money at people who don't dig our foreign policy seems like a big waste to me. We have a finite amount of cash and aid to distribute, friends first please.

First time in 60 years Canada has not had a seat on the UN council. What a black eye to Canada. Very sad day for Canada, very sad day.

Not exactly his words. He said we don't deserve a seat on the Security Council, and he's right.

Yeah, and Michael Ignatieff with his quote (as you put it); "we don't deserve a seat on the Security Council," played politics with Canada image so he might possibly win an election..

Ignatieff is not much of a Canadian if you ask me.

the blame is squarely on Harper's shoulders for not doing the job.
