Yukon should just stop all services to the band. After all, they are a nation, so why is a mere territory giving them foreign aid in the form of services.

But just wait for the howling the first time a child is killed on the reserve. "where was the white manm why didn't the white man prevent this. This is all because of white racism, etc" Same thing happens when they chase cops off the reserve, then cry that the cops are not enforing the law.

That's funny. The Inuit don't consider themselves 'First Nation'. Who wrote this article?

I completely appreciate the attitude towards social workers. Hate to say, I've seen way too many social workers want to seize the kids of military parents just because one of the parents was deployed. Then you have to move the kids on base and tell the social workers to f*ck the hell off when they come on base to try to seize the kids. And while regular cops and even the Federal authorities typically require warrants to enter a home a social worker can do so with impunity. While I'm not ignorant of the abuse that FN kids suffer, that abuse does not excuse the abuse carried out by social workers and, too, I will also give the FN some slack for remembering the residence schools.

You've never seen a two year old dressed in only a diaper stand outside sucking his bottle in -30C watching you work while the parents watched TV game shows? Seen a three year old with burns on his belly because he leaned on the wood stove? Or another pee behind the TV while his parents goshed and darned told you not to do that, ignorant of how much kick there is in an old CRT transformer?
How about been let in the house to do service work by a woman with black eyes $ fat lip and noticed head size holes in the wallboard and the phone ripped clean out? And as you're wading thru the empties to fix it you see a six year old with a fat lip mopping the blood off the floor in another room?
I've been the one that's called the social workers many times.

The FN want independence and sovereignty, then give it to them. Or extinguish the culture that engenders the problems. But half-measures that violate and trample on the rights of the FN while, in the final result, doing nothing to address the root causes of the problems is nothing more than creating a perennial jobs program for social workers.

Or we could just demand the Queen hand over every reserve to the government of Canada or we leave the commonwealth.

With that sovereignty they want a good chunk of land and money. In BC, more than 100% of the land is under native land claims, not leaving much room for the rest of us. And even if we only cede a lot less land than that, do we really want Canada pockmarked by a bunch of Bantustans.

As for extinguishing the culture, we tried that and it didn't work too well either. But I agree we need to invite them to our culture, help them adapt to it, and those that don't want to, we should be much tougher with.

As for perennial jobs for social workers, white culture in both Canada and the US seems to be pretty good at creating the situations for their need too. It's easy to blame the social workers, but at the root is a system that doesn't want to invest money up front to solve the problems, just wants to do as little as possible. What we wind up doing then is spending a big whack on the justice system instead, while we tut tut about the problems.

The pockmarks will be the places left where Canadians can live. :!:

Sovereignty is a double-edge sword. If they ask for it, give it to them. And then require them to have passports to travel in Canada, no special rights or etc. whatsoever.

Social agencies are jobs programs for social workers. 100 years ago you dealt with immigrant problems by aggressively putting people in school and by busting some heads when it was called for. My Irish ancestors were no pretty lot and they were no better than the worst FN, I'm sure. But they were not given a choice about assimilation. I thank God Canada isn't dealing with the Irish or you'd be overrun with papist Fenians demanding that you all learn to speak Gaelic.

Indeed, I jumped the gun and immediately thought of Yukon...arctic, Inuit...it didn't occur to me that non-Inuit were living in the far North. I admit my guilt. Then again, are you so bored you have to quote me in excited glee with a WTF!!!!! connotation? Wait, you're from the North right? Nothing better to do? Probably not.

My brother in-law worked as a social worker on the White Dog Res not long after graduating. He was supervised by a native women who had only gone as far as grade 8 and was paid nearly twice as much. He worked there less than a year but saw the most disgusting things done there to each other including rape and killings. He moved to the west coast and couldn't go back to that profession for over 12 years. Took that long to try and forget what he'd seen.
