Tough talk, Mr. Harper, but I want to see him follow through not the likes of which of his promises of Ice breakers, Arctic patrol ships, etc. For over 25 years this country has been the destination of choice for queue-jumpers and criminals, while genuine, downtrodden refugees who seek a better life legally wait their turn in line. It's time to fix this but.....this is Canada and only in Canada.

And apparently we Canadians take a very dim view of queue-jumpers.

Not dim enough to actually do anything about it. In true Canadian fashion we apologize to them for inconveniencing them instead, and give them more welfare than Canadian residents get.

Harper talks tough to keep us happy, but he's got one eye on all those Tamil votes in Ontario, so he won't actually do anything except talk.

Takes a tough stance??? Are you freakin kidding me?? A tough stance would have been sending a destroyer out to intercept them and if they refused to alter course, fire a few rounds across their bow. Getting "tough" once they've been allowed to land is nothing but bullshit bluster.

    * See Derb? I ragged on Harper without invoking the Liberals. Happy now?

Ya real tough! I might.. I may ... it could -- perhaps... its troublesome..
but no concrete decisions.. the law should have been in place by now, they knew they were coming for months and they know there are more on the way.. but hey think of the Tamil votes eh?

Ken. Are you seriously saying the government was wimpy because it wants Tamil votes?

You are well off target on this assumption. Now the Tories are promising to 'get tough' on bogus refugees like this Tamil ship.

You are letting your hatred of Harper get in the way of thinking clearly here.

This will win zero votes for Harper in Toronto, where all the Tamils will end up. The Tamils will never vote for the Tories. You are missing the point totally.

Here's a sampling of the basic maximum welfare payments in Ontario. The figures include allotments for basic needs and shelter allowances:

    * Single person with no children -- $585 monthly

    * Single person with one child 17 or under -- $913 monthly

    * Single person with two kids 17 or under -- $961 monthly

    * Single person with two dependent adults -- $1,303 monthly

    * Couple with no children -- $1,010 monthly

    * Couple with one kid 17 or under -- $1,058 monthly

    * Couple with two children under 17 -- $1,112 monthly

    * Couple with two dependent adults -- $1,400 monthly
Guess there is no rush in implementing any laws.. after all it will be the good people of Ontario who will foot the bill

I hear you my friend, but harper will be desperately seeking any vote he can muster in the next election. News out this morning says he is now ignoring Qubec totally and the bloc will put record numbers in parliament next election. And lets not forget there are hundreds of thousands of Tamils in Canada which would be big voter gets for any party

You need to be a Canadian Citizen to vote in the federal election.

There's about 200,000 plus Tamils in Canada (plus 490). I understand the sentiment, but I also doubt that Harper will pander to them at the cost of his roots, i.e. the West which is very pro change to immigration laws.

Honestly, I do not understand you targeting Harper on this when both the Liberals and NDP are the ones saying Harper needs to tune down his rhetoric and do more for these people..

Ahh... very true. Nor do you need to be a citizen to influence voting on an ethnic level.
