A Saskatoon police officer sent to a home to give a next-of-kin death notification Saturday is under review after he shot and killed a dog on the property.
To be fair the article states that the officer was attacked, if the owners are unable to control their dogs in their own yard then I feel no sympathy for them.
i find it very very odd that with all the beating into the head they give you to almost never pull your gun that this, presumably in good shape, strong officer, felt it was necessary to shoot a dog with two other able bodied bystanders watching who would have stopped it.
IMO Tottaly uncalled for on officers part UNLESS the dog was a pitbull, greatdane, or german shep and huge

It does not take a big dog to be dangerous, he was being attacked by a dog when several were present, a couple smaller dogs is more than enough to cause serious harm to a person, he had to deal with several.

Thanks got it Dogs are several times faster than people, a much smaller target, the article stated several dogs were in the residence and the cop chose a weapon that had more than one shot and made a loud enough noise that even if he missed it would likely scare off the dogs. Tasers only have one shot, it is amazing that one cop in the video managed to hit the dog.

I was bitten in the face by a little Collie-cross in the UK. I had 6 stitches.

aww that sucks. I was bit by a German Shep in the face when it came up to my lemonade stand outside my house and i tried to pet it. i was about 6 no joke lol. 8 stitches.
Just IMO he didnt need to shoot the dog, the owners would not have stood by and watched, how many ever dogs they were, kill anyone. But hey if i had a gun at that time in that situation, who the hell knows what would have happened?
Tasers have one shot for knocking somebody down (they do have a second cartridge mounted on the pistol butt). They also have a 'dry-stun' capability which doesn't do the 5 second interruption of muscular control but fuckin hurts.
All front-line officers should get Tasers and things like this can be avoided.
But the Mounties fucked that one up.
Any further proliferation of Tasers will cause a great gnashing of teeth and lots of whining from the media.
The Taser is a great bit of kit and saves lives. But the users need to be properly trained and its usage strictly controlled just like firearms.

We head-butt dogs in Manchester. Acid has a point.
We were pretty used to all the druggies having pit-bulls etc. Bashing them on the nose with a baton seems to get the message across. Dogs don't like having their noses caved in.

Not a good day at the Office for this cop or the family. Tasers work great on dogs......
