Bethany Lott, 25, was struck and killed by lightening atop a mountain, minutes before her boyfriend was poised to pop the question.

    You can't always predict the weather when you go hiking. But you can sure get the hell off the top of the mountain if it's daylight and get to safer ground. OTOH, I've been camped on top of a glacier with a lightning storm coming up at night - metal tent poles and all. No way I'm going to stumble around in the dark to try to find lower ground, and on a glacial plateau lower ground can be a long ways off. We were basically the highest little pimple in the area, and all we could do was go back to sleep and hope for the best, hope the lightning would find our ski poles a better conductor than the tent poles.
