Deployed soldier hounded by phone bill

complete bs, I used to work for a cell company, they froze accounts all the time if people were going somewhere for a while, or other reasons. $5 a month to keep their number.

I kept paying my bills when I was deployed. A contract is a contract.

Agreed, besides which, exactly how much is his monthly bill? Probably under $50/month, so with all the extra money he is making overseas I can't see this causing some great financial distress.

Nothing is this life is free, regardless of your current occupation. IMO I would have liked rogers to show more sympathy of his current situation and some support for servicemen and servicewomen. However, still there choice to make and he made the contract. As stated above, a contract is a contract. You cannot get out of it and being deployed to war is no exuse to get out of it or not pay your bills.

We pay way higher for cell phone use than most industrialized countries and here's a prime example why........no competition. Any company that charges you with a monthly fee to have the ability to call 911 needs a kick in the nuts anyway. The reason they want you to sign a contract is so they can continue to screw you and provide poor service. I've had Rogers for 15+ years and have never had a problem with billing but I know if I did................I wouldn't get dinner before the screwing started.

Lack of competition really isn't the point though. They sign a contract they stick to it or find another company, there are more than one, if they don't like any contracts then don't use a cell phone, it is possible to live without them if one is so disgusted.

I you live in a large city there are more than one. If you live in a rural area in Canada you may be lucky to have one and they can treat you however they like. I live in a larger city and only have two carriers to choose from. Depending on the cell tower coverage needed, you may only have one to choose from. My Rogers phone doesn't work outside my city limits and I can't get cell service without driving 5 hours west or 6.5 hours east. That leaves me with the other if I want the "spotty" coverage outside the city.
They want people locked into contracts so they don't have to compete with their rivals month to month, so that makes it a contract to unfairly keep you out of the competition for a longer period. My friend lives in Florida during the winter and pays $20/month no contract and unlimited calling. My wife who rarely has her phone turned on never mind actually use it pays $45/month and had to sign a 2 year contract.
Canadians are getting screwed by their cell phone providers..........but haven't figured it out yet.

We've figured it out, but as you pointed out, we have no choice. One or two carriers (we have 3 - all of which suck), and they're all price gouging because they can.

Now when the Telco wants to alter it, things tend to be a little more .

It'd be nice if Rogers made an exception for soldiers, but he did sign a contract, I guess.
