An Edmonton boy arrived in New York City on Tuesday to undergo surgery to fix a large swelling on the left side of his face that was caused by a rare disorder.

I'm so happy for this little guy. It'll make a huge difference to him. Especially once he's school age.
I hope this prompts some serious pressure on all provincial health boards to have this surgery covered by our own health care plans. This family shouldn't have had to go through all of this.

WHY is this not covered??? Childrens healthcare should be covered, no matter what.

Sorry, I didn't see the other link to this story.
Anyways, amazing generosity is what allowed this to happen, He is in surgery right now and allot of people are hoping for the best.
Alberta health is a farce, it was before the superboard took over and even more so since.

Well after they pay the $540K / year bill for a new drug that will keep a young boy alive for a few more years where I live, they don?t have the cash for cosmetic surgery.

It is but he would have a wait period of at least 9 months they said. This way here they get to see a specialist directly with no wait.

Didn't see anything about drugs, just a second surgery (which I heard but, am not sure is the cosmetic needed). This surgery was to remove the cysts which were blocking his vision/airways and affecting his vocal chords
Anyway, sometimes the generosity of people towards stranges astounds me, especially when it comes to kids.

I read that the wait was just to see if AB Health would cover, no guarentees it would be., Looking for link now.

Hate to remind you folks, but in about 5-6 years after Obamacare is fully implenmented this kind of thing will no longer be an option for Canadians (unless you cross the border illegally and say you're Mexican and then we'll even pay the bills for you.).

Well, one would hope to see some cooperation between the 2 countries to make healthcare smoother and faster. It's pretty common in Europe to have your surgery in Germany or Belgium or even Italy if the waiting lists in your own country are too long. Insurance pays, usually, and they help you find the best and fastest hospital.

First off, with the way the voters are rejecting every single incumbent who supported Obamacare I seriously expect it to be repealed in the next session of Congress.

Second, I don't see the US forming a North American Healthcare Agreement with Canada because, hate to say, it would be kind of one-sided. For the time being, at least, it's Canadians coming south because they don't want to wait or don't have the care they need available in Canada. I mean no offense when I say this, but if Canadians are unable to find specialised care when they need it in Canada, why would Americans be able to?

How many Americans do you think shop cross border for medication?
It works both ways. Like everything works both ways.

But hey, the US is bigger and better huh ;-)
