There is now evidence Asian carp may have slipped into Lake Michigan, a development that could dramatically transform all of the Great Lakes because the large fish are known for dominating the waters they inhabit.
Oh oh, watch out for flying fishies. Those are the ones that jump ten feet out of the water in schools, and hit boaters. And get ready for native stocks to start to disappear.
Oh great cant wait for it to hit the streams and rivers draining into Huron.....
Hopefully the lampreys do a number on them and then dont explode in population also... Oh wait some of these fish are big enough to survive a few lamprey attacks, great

That's terrible. Then the fish farms from which they orginated from should be held responsible for this. Rivers flood all the time and the Mississippi is one that has very regular flood issues so safeguards should have been in place to prevent this from happening.
Why was the Asian carp being farmed to begin with anyway? For food? What's so special about it?

The Asian carp can flourish in rice fields and even sewage ponds which is why it is popular in Asia. With a few million Asian immigrants in the Mississippi watershed it's perfectly logical to expect them to use the farming practices they're familiar with so putting carp in the rice fields is to be expected.
American rice farmers typically run tilapia in the rice fields while the Asians run Asian carp.
"coaster_dot" said This things can be nasty. I live right by the lake and I always hear fisherman complaining about them. I need to get my fishing license soon
Check your local regs, you might not need a license to take carp.
That's always an option

Does anyone here know why they were ever imported to begin with?
