A Canadian general in southern Afghanistan has vowed to "break the back" of Taliban insurgents as the hard-line Islamist movement rejected participation in proposed peace talks with the Afghan government.

    I always find it odd this type of information makes it to the papers. It's not much, but piece by piece it paints a picture to the Taliban, who have already proven to be a smart enemey. Why give them anything at all?
