KANDAHAR, Afghanistan It's one of the basic tenets of counter-insurgency, and it's being deployed aggressively in the dangerous regions southwest of Kandahar city: drive out the enemy, make the area safe for the locals, and then stay there as long as yo

I don't know why we can't extend the mission unti'll it's ready. I know the war is costly but look at how much progress we are making. Even the U.S. is copying our stragies and putting them in effect. If we cut now it's just going to be another war Canada took part in but never got any respect for.

The most respect I have been given over the years has been from other soldiers in other armies. The least amount of respect has come from self-described left-wing Canadians!

Besides, name another war Canada took place in but didn't get any "respect" for?

We dont have enough bodies to keep the mission going longer, we need to get out in 2011. I dont see us being gone for too long though.

Guy, there will still be troops in Afghanistan after 2011 but they will be doing operations other than combat. Mentoring, training etc.. The wording was the "combat" mission was ending in 2011.

Oh I know, when I say we need to get out I mean that we need the battlegroup out.

Agreed. I have friends who are on their 4th tour there! The troops do need a break, even if they won't admit it themselves.

The entire military needs a break, the CF needs time to gear down to close to a peace time level. I could definately see us going on another deployment in 2016.
