OTTAWA - The redesign of the navy's new generation of supply ships is completed, but it will still be next year before the Conservative government is ready to talk to industry about building them.

    Testifying before the Senate defence committee last spring, the assistant deputy minister of materiel said that a request for proposals for three new joint support ships likely won't be issued until next year, and it will take another five to six years before the first one is delivered to the fleet.


    My gut reaction to this is... totally unacceptable.

    Someone needs to light a fire under MacKay's ass on this. The longer it takes to get this finalized and construction started is how long we'll be without a vital capability.

    This project is now over a decade old and it's getting to be a big joke, just like the MHP.

    At this point the only way to get new ships quickly is buy an existing design from someone else, and if we really wanted them fast, get them to build it too.

    Or we could buy used ones. Maybe the Brits are selling some for $5 like those great sub replacements!
