The display of an 18th century French coat of arms at the Canadian War Museum in Ottawa is insulting, and the artifact should be returned to Quebec City, says a French Canadian heritage group.

I was in Amsterdam where they have the masthead and coat of arms from a captured Royal British Navy ship in their museum... as much as I lamented it being there (from a battle hundreds of years ago) I knew enough history to understand why it was and the circumstances surrounding it... does this mean that the Dutchmen I was surrounded by were laughing at me and spitting at the three lions? no... it's part of HISTORY. It happened, that's that. Learn a little something and get on with your life

I say sell it back to them, at a greatly inflated price.

Reminds me of the story about France being insulted by England naming a train station "Waterloo". They responded they'd be happy to rename the station "Agincourt".

I guess we could always replace it with a white flag.

Another day another fresh steaming bowl of French snivelling. I suppose Impratif Franais needs to justify itself somehow.

"Even if you're not a francophone, it's still a hugely important part of your history and something you shouldn't forget that the European presence in Canada begins with New France."

Wrong.... the European (or in better detail, the French) presence in Canada began in the Maritimes you nit wit... get a fk'n clue.

The first french settlers were the Acadians back in the late 1500's/early 1600's, while the first french settlers in the Quebec area started in the 1600's afterwards.

Once again, I guess the damn maritimes mean squat when it comes to Canada.

If anybody should be getting the coat of arms, it should be the remaining Acadians in south western Nova Scotia... but personally speaking, I say leave it where it is and bugger off.

God, how damn pissy and ignorant can Quebecers be? They're stuck so far up their own asses that they don't even know their own damn french history.

    Actually, you know what?

If they're going to fight to get the coat of arms back..... just send it to the Acadians to put in their own historical museums... and piss the Quebecers right the hell off.... it's not like they could do anything about it. It's the French Coat of Arms, not the Quebec Coat of Arms and it was given to the French  Just not them.

The permanent European presence in Canada does indeed begin with New France - he is correct - however, it is CANADIAN, and it represents a part of our shared national experience and should be accessible to all Canadians. Its fine in the Canadian War Museum

I think the main point of contention is that this valuable artifact was looted. I guess they have a point. We make war looters return artifacts, we still spend millions of dollars tracking down art stolen by the Germans to return to its rightful owners. What's good for the goose should be good for the gander, I guess.

Kind of reminds of a Metis town bell that was looted by Canadian troops during the Red River Rebellion. The bell had some kind of historical significance to the locals so the troops took it as a trophy back to Ontario to display in their legion hall. Then one day some group of Metis broke in and stole it back and the legion members were "outraged" at the "theft"

It's a CANADIAN artifact and Quebec IS still part of Canada. Last time I checked it still was anyway.
