A Saskatoon bus driver who was worried a mandatory background check with a U.S. security firm would result in a loss of her privacy has scored a victory.

    what kind of personal info are they going to get? what color her eyes are, and how tall she is? if she wants the job, these are the rules, but no lets take it to court. sounds like she is afraid of something in her past, most likely something that happened in the states, do you want her driving your kids around

    Sounds like she has something to hide, though if she lived in the US in the past a Canadian firm would be able to find out.

    What is the point for a government based company (SCHOOLbus drivers are government employees, right?) to hire a foreign company to do their background checks?

    You of course assume that maintaining your right to keep your information private is 'hiding' it and therefore 'bad'.

    US firms can and do get to keep any information they find out about you in the course of such 'checks'. Then, then can sell it to the highest bidder. They also give it to the US government upon request. Why does the US government need to know all sorts of intimate details about a Canadian citizen?

    must be some kind of cost thing, i think bus drivers are some kind of provincial employee not sure, anyone know? there is no standard in place, so its going to the lowest bidder?

    I am assuming, you are correct there.
    What I'm also saying though is that a Canadian securities firm will be able to find trouble on you if it was in the States or not, if she's submitting to a check by a Canadian firm then fine with me.
    If she was hired with the understanding that a check would be done then she should submit to said check. though you're right again about the US fims doing them.

    I quite agree, the check is required for the job. But, the check does not have to be through a US firm, so I am 100% behind her on that. The PIPEDA is very strict when it comes to personal information, and a Canadian firm is bound by it.

    I see her point. I wouldn't submit to a background check by a US firm either.
    I'm a Canadian, applying for a job in Canada, the US don't need to get their dirty little mitts involved. There is no such thing as privacy in the US anymore, and it's starting to get pretty rare here too. Besides, I've been getting background and security checks from Canadian police forces for years. They seem to be quite competent at it.

    Schoolbus drivers are employees of the schooldistrict, just like teachers. At least here in BC they are. Schooldistrict employees are paid by taxes. Which makes it a government issue, imo. Federal, provincial or municipal, I really do not give a fuck.
    MY taxes are going to a US business, while we have plenty of Canadian businesses who can do the same.

    MY taxes are going to a US business, while we have plenty of Canadian businesses who can do the same.

    Here in Alberta they are private companies that charter to the school boards. Some schools have their own drivers though.
