Ruby Dhalla has suffered a blow to her credibility since three foreign workers alleged they were mistreated while working at the Liberal MP's house, according to a new Angus Reid/Toronto Star poll.
Embattled Brampton-Springdale MP Ruby Dhalla insists she still has the support of many in the Filipino community despite this weeks recant by the former president of a local seniors organization. Shortly after Dhalla and her family were accused of mistreating Filipino nannies hired to take care of her mother in her Mississauga home, the MPs office released letters of support from various members of the community. Among them was a letter signed by Aurora Villanueva, former president of the Brampton Filipino Seniors Club. However, this week, Villanueva retracted the letter. She reportedly said the letter was written by Dhallas office and although she signed it, she was misled by the politicians staff about the serious nature of the allegations. According to Villanueva, the letter has resulted in significant backlash within her community. Dhallas office would not answer questions about the latest developments, but issued a written statement in response to the apparent about-face by Villanueva. I appreciate Ms. Villanuevas clarification. However, she is not speaking on behalf of all the Brampton Filipino Seniors Club, the statement read. Many members of the Filipino Seniors Club and community have expressed their support in letters, phone calls and e-mails. I appreciate the words of encouragement and support from constituents and Canadians. A spokesperson for the club could not be reached for comment.
