The pirates, considered to be part of a sophisticated organized crime network, say their kidnapping and ransom of ships' crews is a form of payback for the shrinking fish catches and environmental havoc after coastal communities discovered drums of industrial and nuclear waste washed ashore after the Dec. 26, 2004, tsunami.

I knew it, and I was right! It does have to do with fish stocks, and these pirates are fishermen.

I'm so glad you feel vindicated because the reporters regurgitated the talking points that were sent out by the progressive press, months ago. No indication that these honest, out of work fishermen were out fishing to support their poor starving families at the time.

There's a crapload of poor countries in Africa that haven't turned to piracy, an dthe last time the US tried to help Somolia, it all turned to crap. I see no reason why we should try and help again.

You must be some kind of special genius. You've figured out a way to catch fish where there aren't any! Perhaps you could help these poor fishermen, and turn them away from piracy.

That's right...let's leave a bunch of terrorists to their own devices...and then we can all be utterly stunned when 9/11 part deux happens.

Those who don't learn from history are doomed to repeat it...

Thanks to the prosperity of our western society, you are all free to send your money to these foreign devils to raise them from the tyrany of crime that must certainly go hand in hand with poverty. You're free to let that indictrinated white mans guilt guide you're pens to put as many numbers on a check that you like.

While your rewarding these criminals for their behavior, remember that there are a large number of countries that are just as poor who have the dignaty and humanity not to resort to this crap. Maybe they could should get your money instead.

ridenrain, haven't you heard the old proverb? You can give a man a fish, and he'll eat for a day. Teach a man to fish and.... I hope you know the rest.

The only problem is, these guys probably already know how to fish, there just isn't anything left for them to catch.

They may be just as poor, but they're probably all living in fear of some despot that won't go away and die. Somalia doesn't have a despot, it doesn't really have any government at all.

    I prefer:
Build a man a fire and he'll be warm for a while.
Set a man on fire and... oh. wait a sec..
    Dohhh.

Their sending ships far and wide to pirate but these honest fishermen won't send ships far and wide to fish?
The last time the world tried to help Somolia, they bit our fingers. Without local effective order, there is no effective way to distribute aid and we can't go in and impose order.

It's their problem and Allah's will.
