Canada should push for the creation of an international park that would protect the area around the North Pole, Liberal Leader Michael Ignatieff said Monday.

Does Iggy not know that we claim territory right up to the North Pole?

Is he suggesting we give away Canadian territory, to the "world" of all things, for an "international park"?

    Strike one Iggy.

North pole is just a 'point'. Everything around it is already claimed.

    edit: I forgot 'pole'.

Exactly, I think Iggy needs to brush up on his history. I am not going to completely give up on him yet though. He can still prove he is worth the vote.

In all fairness, it;s just an idea he's read about, he's not actually proposing that as a solution or Liberal platform idea. There's nothing wrong with studying every side of a problem. But the only way we should give up any territory for this idea is if everyone else gives up an equal amount, otherwise this is a total non-starter.

At least Iggy is willing to defend the Arctic with icebreakers, patrols and the Rangers.

I don't think we should give up any territory.

    Not one square inch.

Maybe the one square inch at the North Pole

That would be the 'international park'.

    That would be just awesome!
I can take the kids there on the weekends to play on the ice.
What's the use of a park at the north pole?

Sounds like Iggy is coming up with a very typically liberal response to a problem. The north pole will either be declared a unesco site so its untouchable or will be owned by some corporate interest. I recall when Mike Harcourt turned over the Tatsheshini upper Alsek river area over to a world heritage site after billions had been spent on developmont of a copper mine there by Geddes resources. This was one of the biggest known copper desposits in the world. As Canadians and BCers that decision cost us billions and we also lost sovereignty of that area thanks to a bunch of tree huggers and the sierra clubbers and the bleeding heart ndp in the BC government.

international park ? why not just make it a canadian national park , wouldn't that do the trick ? like if we make it an international park then who would it belong to ? like as an international park we could end up giving it to the UN or one of those agencies and who knows what they'd do with it or what would happen to the rest of the nearby area .

.....and here I was starting to like Ignatieff, I probably would have voted for him in the next election. I guess that idea's gone out the window.
