LONDON -- After years of paying next to nothing in property taxes, the Sisters of St. Joseph in London are looking for political allies to challenge a tax bill they fear could be as high as $400,000 a year.

So how much do the Mosques get taxed in Britian? or do the Muslims get a free ride this year in Britian like they do every year?

As much as I like seeing religion finally paying tax's. That is going to hurt there charity donations. Though this is the Catholic Church. They are rolling in dough, I am sure they can afford a measly 400, 000 a year. That's pope pocket change.

What an idiot thing to say. You realize these "god lovers" also ran a soup kitchen and helped the poor?

Last year alone, the London order donated $229,000 in the city and funded a soup kitchen.

Because it's on a Canadian Site? They also discuss U.S. politics on that site, and U.S. Articles. When I saw London, naturally I assume the UK.

What makes you think its London Ontario?

    Basicly... my reading skills... ;-)

But the nuns unwittingly said goodbye to more than stately Mount St. Joseph at Richmond Street and Windermere Road, once home to as many as 250 nuns and a girls' school -- they also ended a long-standing tax exemption.

Three months after the nuns moved into their new home at 485 Windermere Rd. east of Richmond, they were visited by a lawyer for Ontario's Municipal Property Assessment Corp. (MPAC).

That, and the fact that I wonder if the UK actually has property tax like Canada does. But that is just an assumption...

Well I appreciate you insulting my reading skills... not ;). However I did make a mistake, so I apoligize for assuming a article source location labeled London was from the UK. If I were saying that, it would sound like sarcasm ;).

Who cares if they are "god lovers" their charitable work alone should allow them a tax break.

I thought it did. I mean, if the nuns move into an efficient structure...what's the big deal? They do both God's work with helping the poor/homeless, and try to save the environment at the same time. Sheesh.

Smacking someone with a tax bill they were exempted from previously because they moved to a more efficient building smells strongly of bad legislation. Were they informed or made aware of the situation in any way?

According to the article they weren't exempt before but a mistake was make that allowed them exemption, the government wasn't going to allow the mistake to continue.

Why should it?. I agree they are providing a good service but so does the local boys and girls club or the local old folks home, dont see any taxs breaks there, hell maybe we should give the police a tax break too since they "protect" us.

We don't though, cause the land is the same regardless of what the property on it does. You own property you pay property tax
