NDP Leader Jack Layton has unveiled a platform aimed at helping Canadian families at the expense of big business, but the plan would quickly increase government spending by $8 billion.
In the first year, the plan would boost government spending by about
I really dont think massive amounts of government handouts over long periods of time will benifit Canada. This plan could turn around and screw Canada 5-6 years from now, when corporate investment tapers off due to high taxes.
Just read Jacks plan and since me and the wife both work i would say we qualify as a working family. So I'll reveal how much jacks plan 'benefits" me.
1. New baby bonus. My kids are grown up and according to the government for the last 10 years or so I make too much money to qualify.
2. Improving natives lives. I'm not a native so this one doesn't benefit me one bit.
3. Corporate tax rate increase. Cost of living increases due to business passing on cost to consumers. More money out of my pocket.
4. Undergraduate loans. Both my sons pay for their own education, no loans required.
5. National child care. See point one above.
6. Seniors home care. Not that old yet and both my parents are financially and physically in great shape.
7. Invest in public transport. I live about 30kms outside the city, so better work on expanding that bus service to my house.
So, as a working family Jacks vision offers nothing for me but higher costs for everyday products and paying more in taxes for everyone elses kids. Thanks jack, you got my vote.
By those standards, 2Cdo, you wouldn't be voting for Harper either.
This is a good, solid plan. The corporate tax rate would remain where it has been for the last several years. It's just that Harper's tax breaks for them wouldn't take effect.
Education is the best predictor of future income, so helping students pay for post-secondary will help them earn more.
Lack of affordable child care is one of the biggest blocks to single parents ability to join or advance in the work force, and child care is a major expense for most parents.
Increasing Harper's baby bonus just raises it to a level where it will actually do people some good.
Of course if you live by the creed of personal greed and don't give a shit about anybody but yourself, you'll prefer Harper's non-platform.
It just freaks me out when he says he will be spending 18.1 billion extra, I dont know if corporate tax and carbon auctions will cover it. A bug out from Afghanistan would free up more cash, but I dont think a sudden withdrawl is a good idea.

No, it will get passed on to the consumer, meaning more money out of my pocket.
Education is the best predictor of future income, so helping students pay for post-secondary will help them earn more.
Students can get a job and pay for their education like mine did. It also teaches them how to budget and not live beyond their means.
Lack of affordable child care is one of the biggest blocks to single parents ability to join or advance in the work force, and child care is a major expense for most parents.
Single parents can get their childs father/mother to help pay then. I paid for my childrens child care and it wasn't cheap, but we managed.
Increasing Harper's baby bonus just raises it to a level where it will actually do people some good.
If people are having children based on baby bonuses without considering whether they can afford to raise their children we have problems.
Of course if you live by the creed of personal greed and don't give a shit about anybody but yourself, you'll prefer Harper's non-platform.
Of course, if you want people to pay their own way through life it's greed. I have worked hard and sacrificed a lot to raise my children, others can do the same.
The government should not be in the baby-sitting business period. If you can't afford day care, wait until you have a decent job before you have kids.
Problem with Jacks plan is the only people who still have jobs will be working will be for the government because that corporate tax jump will be a job killer.
Naw it won't. Corporations need people to make it work soooo the government will bail them out. We don't want to pay for child care but we're willing to pay for it by keeping their moms and pops employed.
No, it will get passed on to the consumer, meaning more money out of my pocket.
But they haven't had a cut yet...that happens with their next returns. If they raise their prices by two percent because they have to pay the same as they did before, that pretty much proves Jack's point.
Also, they aren't known for passing the savings on, and your theory is dependent on them having dropped consumer prices by the same amount they got in tax breaks. These are the same guys who raised their prices when the GST cut came and took forever...in many cases are still taking forever...to pass on the benefits of a higher dollar.
Don't blame Layton for the corporations ripping you off...they've been doing it since the invention of corporations.
Students can get a job and pay for their education like mine did. It also teaches them how to budget and not live beyond their means.
Except post-secondary education is expensive and jobs that pay enough to cover it are few and far between. Your elitist roots are showing.
Single parents can get their childs father/mother to help pay then. I paid for my childrens child care and it wasn't cheap, but we managed.
Okay, I'm not sure alternate universe you live in, but that's just stupid. There are a lot of cases of deadbeat dads out there. There are a lot of people who are single parents because their spouses died or were incapacitated.
I know you, from your little elitist perch in that alternate universe you inhabit, would like to think that everybody in financial difficulty is there because they like it, but that simply doesn't match the facts.
If people are having children based on baby bonuses without considering whether they can afford to raise their children we have problems.
Except I never said that and neither did Layton. You made it up...pulled it out of your ass.
People have children for a variety of reasons and circumstances change.
Besides, we're talking about money that will go directly back into the economy in most cases, so it's also an economic driver.
Of course, if you want people to pay their own way through life it's greed. I have worked hard and sacrificed a lot to raise my children, others can do the same.
Ah, here we go again. Only the rich work hard. Anybody who isn't rich is a lazy slacking bastard. It comes up again and again in Conservative rhetoric. It's bullshit of course. People in low and medium-paying jobs work hard. Go see what it is they do for a living and ask yourself if you could do that five or six days a week, fifty weeks a year.
It just freaks me out when he says he will be spending 18.1 billion extra, I dont know if corporate tax and carbon auctions will cover it.
He also said that if the money isn't there, he will have to put off his plans until it is. Go and look at how Tommy Douglas managed to pull Saskatchewan out of trouble and pay for social programs there, and you'll find that Layton is very much following in his footsteps. We're talking about real fiscal management here, not the slight of hand and book-cooking so popular among the Conservative and corporate set.
A bug out from Afghanistan would free up more cash, but I dont think a sudden withdrawl is a good idea.
Nobody is talking about a bug-out though. Layton is very clearly talking about an orderly withdrawal, just starting now instead of in 2011.
Problem with Jacks plan is the only people who still have jobs will be working will be for the government because that corporate tax jump will be a job killer.
You know what the real job killers are? Paying corporations to ship jobs overseas. Tying ourselves to 19th century technology in the 21st century. Giving huge bonuses to CEOs who pollute our country, slash jobs, insist on corporate welfare, and pay for the lobbyists who rotate in and out of Harper's government unchecked.
"Reverend Blair" said Nobody is talking about a bug-out though. Layton is very clearly talking about an orderly withdrawal, just starting now instead of in 2011.
Going this year or the next would be a bug out though, NATO does not have the troops in place to fill Canada's void nor are the ANP and ANA ready to function efficently without Canada's support.
"lily" said Your original post was pure selfishness... if it doesn't benefit you personally, you don't want it. Who cares about other people, eh?
Not necessarily. Actually, C-3PO made a very good point (lol always wanted to say that!)
Instead, Lily, you should direct your selfish comments at politicians themselves. They are the ones looking out for themselves instead of the average Canadians. Layton doesn't give a crap, he pretends to know what is good for all Canadians, yet he doesn't have the slightest clue. He make campaign promises and comes out with several platforms, yet no mention how it will all be funded.
I would not have made it this far in my post secondary education if it was not for student loans. So, once again I'm down with the NDP platform. I also know a lot of single parents who want to go back to school, or further themselves but they cannot because of a lack of funds. And unfortunately, I do think you sound pretty selfish there 2cdo. Yes, your family succeeded but other people need the help in order to make it.
You could come to my house. Bring some decent beer though...Mrs. Rev has taken advantage of my injury to buy discount beer.
You could go to the library. They have books.
You could try Google.
The short version is that he got rid of the deficit, paid down the debt, brought electricity to the farms, indoor plumbing to the small towns, paved highways and decently graveled roads to the entire province, healthcare (first hospitalization, then medicare) to Saskatchewan, and diversified the province beyond being a strictly agricultural economy.
Going this year or the next would be a bug out though, NATO does not have the troops in place to fill Canada's void nor are the ANP and ANA ready to function efficently without Canada's support.
Starting to go...and that starts with informing our allies...is not the same as bugging out.
I'll see what I can find on him, I wouldnt mind bringing some beer but I dont think I could afford the drive out.
The allies already know, the fact is that no one is ready yet. It might be able to be rushed in 2010, any sooner though and we would loose major gains we have made. If pressure is kept on the Taliban they might truely seek diplomatic solutions, they are talking now, but thats all it is from them. If the Taliban were to say set up schedule to ease hostilites, then they could be trusted. Right now they are demanding seats in government and withdrawl of troops, even these demands change daily.
"lily" said Read his post again. He listed the items and wrote how none of them would benefit him because his kids are grown, he's not a senior, etc.
Btw Lil, I am only having some fun here.
Still, after all, that should be the very reason for every individual Canadians to vote for party, right !
Not a particular fan of the NDP myself but for completely other reasons. But at the same time, I will not lash out at any of their supporters, eventhough I disagree with them. The only way there would be any consideration for the NDP could be if Layton was to promise free beer, then and only then, would there be any consideration at all.
