Tories aim to force inmates to work in jail

Hooray! Just like the USA! Slave labour, followed by corporate prisons followed by more laws, followed by more prisons - repeat as needed to get elected.

Hate to disagree with you, Mr. Burns, but I gotta like that putting these guys to work idea. One more thing to make jail a bit more unpalatable.

Anyway, these guys waved lots of their rights when they opted to ignore the laws of society and prey upon other people. I don't have lots of sympathy for thieves, bullies, and just plain idiots.

Hooray. An actual reason for prisoners not to like going back into jail.

It's not about sympathy, I could care less if these scumbags rot on a deserted island. But, since we lock them up and let them out, we should be doing whatever is necessary to ensure that they don't re-offend. The primary goal is a safer society, yes? Does putting them to work accomplish this goal? No. Do longer sentences work? No. Death sentences? No. So why do it? There's only one reason - it gets votes from the uninformed and/or angry electorate.

Do we get our safer society? No.

You're unfamiliar with the concept of "work ethic", arn't you.
That's the basic drive to get you're ass out of bed to trade some effort for some money. It requires people to be clean, sober and drug free, and is very popular with the rest of the world.

Not sure about this,, but they tell me that cons make the license plates for Ontario.. they are pieces of crap and the paint comes off.. they rust out and are ready for the junk yard in a yr or so. I am in favour of cons having to work.. would be interested to know what they would work at or produce.. when I worked at a federal pen they had cons cooking food for the other cons and the staff.. they found feces in the chili and thats no bull... good idea to have them work tho... bravo Mr Harper..

Hmmm, I was under the impression convicts did work. If not where did we get our CORCAN office furniture.

If work's voluntary and the government intends to make it mandatory, i'm all for it. It'd be nice to see some of these con's earning enough money to start paying into the victims funds that they've been avoiding by claiming poverty.

Yeah, teach an inmate a skill and then pay an employer to hire him on release while some poor law abiding shlub who worked hard to become skilled signs up for welfare because the subsidized inmate got the job....

I completely disagree with this statement. If people commit crimes it is not up to us to do whatever is necessary to ensure they dont re-offend. Its up to them. They are the criminals, they should be punished.

The idea is rehabilitation... they are being punished by being incarcerated.. some have jobs and some go to school for retraining while they are doing time.. and are being payed by government funding.. they do have farm annexes and they do grow crops and raise beef and dairy cattle.. this supplies basic food for the prisons.. but I think being able to work is considered a privilege..some volunteer some don't .. so making them work for their keep makes sense. Part of the prison term includes rehabilitation to help them return to society as good citizens and hopefully not re-offend ,but the stats are poor for sure..

Well, I think one can put them to work and train them for life outside prison. Maybe it means long hours, and some grueling days. Maybe academic achievm,ent should count towards successful rehabilitation along with a hell of a lot of sweat.

I don't buy the idea that all thse predators should be doing is catching up on their grade ten math. Advance their skills, and make 'em work like hell.

Everyone in prison should work, learn a trade, and pay for their cable television, 3 meals, laundry, and hydro, anything left goes into the bank, because I would like to think these guys will make minimum wage for their hard work and pay taxes, that way they can contribute to the prisons that hold them

So, does this mean they get their education free or what? Say I'm in jail and want to be a 'Marine Biologist', they pay for me? If so, where's the nearest Mac's?
