They are more concerned with athletes not breaking any records because of the pollution. It's a valid concern. They certaintly can get rid of alot of pollution if they shut down all the factories and cars, but if the winds are blowing just right, they'll just get pollution from other cities or the Gobi desert.
Now all we have to do is wait for the US sprint team to mount the podium and give the black power salute. Or in this case, the Tibetan rythmic gymnastics team to mount the podium and give the one fingered salute.
