Consumers could potentially be hit by a new tax on electronic storage devices such as iPods and blank memory cards in 2008.
The federal Copyright Board has given its approval for a special levy on iPods and other digital players because they can be us
This is fucking retarded. 90% of the CD's I burn are data backup of my personal files.. the other 10% are backups of legitimate software. Yet I pay tax to the recording industry. The movies on my DMP are all copies of movies I legally own on DVD... yet I'll have to pay tax on them ? WTF. Gotta love conservatism.
Everytime a new format of storing music comes out they try this...when cassettes were available for recording there was a dollar levy put on each of the blank cassettes...They screamed that radio would crash the music business...Hell anyone stupid enough, in this day, to sign with a big label doesnt deserve to make money...and they wont.

At least in Canada i can download without penalty...unlike the good old USA
I don't download . Thats a bit hypocritical if you think about it. I refuse to pay the tax on the unit because I don't download and you do, but you don't want to pay the tax on the material that you steal

Well good for you...arent you the pillar of morals. I dont consider it stealing...I check out a couple songs and then if I actually like the band i buy the album...Dude I prolly own way more music then you will ever see in your lifetime...
Ask any band and im not talking top 40 or Metallica ...any band that is hitting the scene, they want the music heard and out there...they really dont care how...If a band is signed to a big label and not there own...they see a pitance of the dollars...they only make money of the merc that they sell at gigs...
The only ones whining about supposed "stealing" is the big labels...
I also didnt say i wouldnt pay the levy...I have in the past on cassettes...whats the diff
It's interesting that the article mentions this is being done to make sure artists get their fair share. Most of the money from cd sales goes to the record producer and the label, artists predominantly make their money from tickets at concert sales and merchandizing. Downloading is like free advertising for these artists and they make more money. What this says to me is groups like the RIAA are more concerned with maintaining the status quo (and their jobs) than what's good for recording artists. The recent release of the Radiohead album is a perfect case in point and is exactly where the music industry is heading. Record labels and record execs are dinosaurs who wish to forestall their end with bullshit copyright lawsuits.

no diff.. but you took issue with me not paying a levy for something that I would never use
therefore I shouldn't have to pay somebody for doing nothing. I paid them when I bought their CD
This levy assumes that you are guilty no matter what... my hands are clean.
It's pure BS, they assume anyone who owns an mp3 player is pirating. Chances are they will, but what about the guy who buys all his stuff from itunes? What's worse is they are going to tax flash memory as well. I have memory in my camera, why should I pay a levy for that. I know why the Conservatives are doing this and it sucks, just as bad as when the Liberals first did it. Strange thing is I thought it was struck down by the courts? If it was why would this time be any different?
This is pure bullshit.. another ... protect my income from the recording industry... the only way to deal with this is where it hurts.. dont buy ...
How many artists... painters, sculptures, writers are protected this way.
I can read anyones book at the public library ,, so how come we dont have a levy on borrowed books to help Stephan King... so they fucking sing.. big deal... I dont see why we have to help say Celine Dion who is a billionaire. protect her income.. I say if its on the net and you have bought and own the equiptment it up for grabs.. same as Satilites.. if its in our sky over head..its ours.... I say fuck em.. dont buy these items if levies are placed on them.. see how fast they deal with it...
PS
The tories giveth and the tories taketh away.. they will always find a way to claw back what little bit they flake off for the little guy.
